Round Ligament Pain AKA Lightning Crotch
Pregnancy Pains? Let’s Talk About Round Ligament Discomfort
Pregnancy, am I right? If you’ve ever felt a sharp, stabbing jolt in your lower belly when standing up too quickly or stretching just a bit too far, you may have met the notorious round ligament pain—sometimes affectionately (or not so affectionately) referred to as “lightning crotch.”
I experienced it during both of my pregnancies—especially at night while changing positions in bed or during the day when standing from the couch. It became a daily routine to manage this sudden discomfort that often caught me off guard.
What Causes Round Ligament Pain?
So, what's behind this discomfort? It's the rapid stretching of the round ligaments, the two cord-like structures flanking the uterus. As the uterus expands to accommodate the growing fetus, these ligaments stretch up to 2x its length, leading to sharp, spasmodic pains with sudden movements.
Managing the Discomfort
Navigating this discomfort took intention. Strengthening my core and pelvic support system became key. I leaned on evidence-based strategies and the guidance of skilled professionals—including a pelvic floor physical therapist and a Webster-certified chiropractor—to help ease the daily strain.
If you’re currently dealing with round ligament pain, know that you’re not alone, and there are effective ways to support your body. You don’t have to suffer through it without tools or strategies.
